Trump Slams Putin Amid Russia’s Surprise Peace Talks Offer to Ukraine

Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Vladimir Putin, just as Russia made a surprising offer for new peace talks with Ukraine. Speaking from the White House, Trump questioned whether Putin is “tapping us along” and warned his patience may soon run out. The development comes as the Kremlin proposed fresh negotiations in Istanbul, raising hopes—and doubts—about the war’s future.

Trump Doubles Down on Putin Criticism

Trump’s comments mark a significant shift in tone. While he has previously avoided imposing sanctions to keep peace prospects alive, that could soon change.

“We’re going to find out whether or not he’s tapping us along or not,” Trump told reporters.
“And if he is, we’ll respond a little differently.”

He expressed frustration over Russia’s intensifying aerial strikes on Ukraine over the weekend, calling them “deeply disappointing.” Despite keeping sanctions off the table for now, Trump hinted that his administration is ready to act if peace efforts prove insincere.

Russia Offers Ukraine Peace Talks in Istanbul

Only minutes after Trump’s remarks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov proposed a new round of peace negotiations. The Kremlin has offered to meet with Ukrainian officials on June 2 in Istanbul, presenting their memorandum for a potential peace deal.

“We hope all those truly interested in peace will support direct talks in Istanbul,” Lavrov said.

Ukraine has yet to confirm attendance. However, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated the government is “not against” the talks but expects Russia to send its proposals first.

Kyiv Hesitant, Germany Criticized

As Ukraine weighs the offer, tensions continue to rise over Western military aid. Lavrov accused Germany of escalating the war by financing long-range missile production in Ukraine. This comes amid Berlin’s refusal to supply the Taurus missiles that President Zelenskyy has repeatedly requested.

Ukraine’s need for ammunition has reached a critical point after a wave of heavy Russian bombardments—some of the largest in the war so far—hit multiple regions over the weekend.

What’s Next for the Peace Process?

With Trump growing skeptical and Russia appearing to open the door to negotiation, the path ahead remains unclear. Whether this marks a genuine peace attempt or a political maneuver by Moscow is yet to be seen.

The next few days could determine whether diplomacy is possible—or if tensions will escalate even further.
