Death Toll Rises in Los Angeles Wildfires as Fierce Winds Loom
Wildfires continue to devastate Southern California, claiming at least 24 lives. As fire crews fight to contain the flames, experts warn that fierce winds are expected to worsen the crisis in the coming days.
Dangerous Winds Expected to Intensify
The notorious Santa Ana winds are set to return, starting Sunday night and continuing through Wednesday. Winds could reach speeds up to 60mph (96km/h), potentially escalating the already deadly fires.
Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin stated, “We’re not even close to the end yet,” as the region braces for “disastrous wind conditions.”
Three Major Fires Burn Across Los Angeles

Three large wildfires continue to threaten Los Angeles:
- Palisades Fire: 23,000 acres burned, 13% contained
- Eaton Fire: 14,000 acres burned, 27% contained
- Hurst Fire: 799 acres, nearly fully contained
New fires continue to erupt, including near the San Fernando Valley and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
Rising Death Toll and Missing People
The LA County Medical Examiner confirmed 24 deaths. At least 16 people remain missing. Most of the fatalities were in the Eaton and Palisades zones.
Estimated Financial Losses Soar
The cost of these wildfires is expected to be immense. AccuWeather now estimates that the fires could result in losses of $250 billion to $275 billion, making them among the most expensive in U.S. history.
Looting and Evacuations Continue
Mandatory evacuations remain in place for 105,000 people, with 87,000 more under evacuation warnings. Authorities have arrested 29 individuals for looting. Some even impersonated firefighters to steal from victims.
Staying Prepared Amidst the Crisis
Fire officials urge residents in evacuation zones to stay alert and be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley emphasized, “Stay off the roads and prepare to leave if necessary.”
Firefighters and Drones: A Dangerous Interference
A recent incident saw a drone colliding with a firefighting plane, causing significant damage and temporarily grounding the aircraft. Authorities have warned drone operators to stay clear of fire zones.
State and Federal Support Mobilized

Governor Gavin Newsom has called for additional support, deploying more National Guard troops. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell also warned residents to be cautious as the fires continue to spread.
The situation remains dire, with officials urging everyone to heed evacuation orders and stay out of the fire zones.
