First American Pope Elected: Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has made history as the first American-born pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Elected by 133 cardinals in the Sistine Chapel on May 7, the 69-year-old Chicago native was introduced with the traditional words “Habemus Papam.” His appointment marks a turning point for the Catholic Church as it moves toward broader global representation and inclusivity.

A Historic Moment for the Church

Pope Leo XIV’s election signals a milestone. Not only is he the first U.S.-born pontiff, but his background also reflects a global Catholic identity. Prevost, born in Chicago and later a missionary in Peru, brings a multicultural perspective to the Vatican.

He was confirmed on May 8 by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, who addressed thousands in St. Peter’s Square. The crowd erupted in celebration after hearing the announcement.

From Chicago to the Vatican

Robert Francis Prevost was born in 1955 in Chicago. He joined the Augustinian order in the 1970s and later worked as a missionary in Peru. His service there shaped his deep connection to Latin America.

He became a bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, in 2015, and Pope Francis later appointed him to lead the Dicastery for Bishops. In 2023, he was made a cardinal.

A Message of Peace and Dialogue

In his first address as pope, Leo XIV said: “May peace be with all of you.” He honored his predecessor, Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, and called for the Church to become more open and missionary in nature.

“We must be a Church that builds bridges and opens its arms to everyone,” he said. He also spoke warmly to Peruvians, saying it was a “great pleasure” to serve among them.

A Pope for a Global Church

Leo XIV is expected to continue Pope Francis’s reforms while focusing on international outreach, social justice, and dialogue. His election suggests a shift toward a more inclusive and missionary church—one that reflects its global members more closely.

With strong ties to both North and South America, Pope Leo XIV is well-positioned to lead the Catholic Church in a time of rapid change and growing diversity.
