US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the potential for peace in Ukraine following “good and productive” talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussions, focused on a US-proposed ceasefire deal, come as both sides cautiously explore ways to end the ongoing conflict. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains skeptical, voicing concerns that Russia may delay the ceasefire.
US-Russia Talks: A Step Toward Peace?
The recent talks between Russian President Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff have sparked cautious optimism about a possible ceasefire. Trump praised the discussions, suggesting that there is “a very good chance” of ending the war. Despite this, Ukraine’s President Zelensky expressed doubts. He believes that Putin is manipulating the ceasefire discussions to delay peace.
The White House remains hopeful, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calling the talks “productive” and emphasizing Trump’s pressure on Putin to seriously consider peace options.
Zelensky Urges Stronger US Action
Ukrainian President Zelensky sees a “good chance” to end the war, but he insists that stronger action is needed from the US and its allies. He’s urging the United States to increase pressure on Russia, fearing that Moscow may use the ceasefire talks to prolong the conflict.
Zelensky also emphasized that US intelligence and satellite support will be vital in monitoring the ceasefire along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) frontline. He acknowledged, however, that resolving territorial issues will be a difficult challenge after a ceasefire is in place. Russia demands that Ukraine permanently cede control of certain territories, which complicates any peace agreement.
International Allies Play a Key Role
The UK is playing an active role in supporting Ukraine’s efforts for peace. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been holding discussions with global leaders, aiming to increase pressure on Russia. His proposed “coalition of the willing” would work to deter further Russian aggression if the ceasefire holds.
In a meeting in Quebec, G7 members aligned with the US proposal for a ceasefire. However, the final decision now lies with Russia. The UK and other Western nations have made it clear that they will not tolerate Russia “playing games” with the peace talks.
Challenges to a Lasting Ceasefire
Although the talks show promise, significant obstacles remain. Zelensky has accused Putin of using conditions as a stalling tactic. Russia insists on territorial concessions from Ukraine, which has caused resistance from Kyiv.
The international community remains divided on how to proceed. Some see Russia’s position as a deliberate delay, while others hope that peace talks will eventually succeed. The involvement of the US, UK, and other allies will be crucial to ensure the ceasefire is upheld.
